The Sad Truth About Online Personals Sites

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Having spent some time working in the online personals biz and having used most all of the sites both personally and professionally, I can tell you that the following joke ad from College Humor is dead on. It’s especially true for the smaller sites like the ones that have the racy ads on Facebook.

Your best best is sticking with the major players like Yahoo, Match, and eHarmony (personally I dislike eHarmony, but it works for a lot of people). Some of the niche sites are OK too, like JDate.

Tom Jones Medic Alert Bracelet

I was in Walgreens tonight and saw this:

It’s an ad for a Medic Alert bracelet.

Clearly the man has fans everywhere even today. The man is a great entertainer.

Maybe an E-Mail Etiquette Class Would Have Been a Better Idea

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

In an effort to increase efficiency, Nielsen has removed the “Reply to All” button from Outook. From Techcrunch:

Nielsen management, after years of research, has finally come up with an adequate solution to cluttered e-mail inboxes and inefficiency in office environments: control-deleting the reply-to-all button from the messaging software…

…In a memo, republished by Folio, Andrew Cawood, Chief Information Officer for Nielsen Company, writes that the measure will “eliminate bureaucracy and inefficiency”…

But is this really the reason for the change?

…About half a year ago Mitchell Habib, Executive Vice President at Nielsen, managed to accidentally cc all Nielsen employees in a reportedly arrogant note to another employee, ending his e-mail with the now famous-in-certain-circles punch line “Who do you work for, and why do you think copying me on this is appropriate?”.

I suspect that particular blunder led to this strange situation.

Perhaps an e-mail etiquette class and paying more attention to what you’re doing would have been a more graceful solution. Though as was stated in some of the comments, I’ve seen the “Reply to All” button bring corporate mail servers to their knees on more than one occassional even leading to a termination in one case.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Dad and I went to Fisherman’s Wharf today. It’s always nice to get fresh Dungeness crabs and clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl. Yummy!

The sea lions were out making a bunch of noise at Pier 39.

And out in front of the In-N-Out Burger was The Bushman. This dude sits on a milk crate holding branches he cut off of a tree. He hides behind them and pops out to scare people walking by. He got us when we walked by. We wondered how he kept from getting his ass kicked. Turns out he hires a body guard. Claims to make about $60k a year. You can read about him at the link above. Pretty interesting stuff. He’s been doing this for years. It’s hilarious watching him. We sat in the In-N-Out burger watching him while we ate. BTW, In-N-Out Burger kicks ass!

Alcatraz was just as impressive the second time around as it was the first. The island was opened up so we could walk around more. The place is much smaller than you’d imagine and the cells are depressing. They’re small, damp, and cold. Few get any sunlight. It must have been terrible to have been there so close to the city, being able to hear all the life going on around you, yet knowing you were stuck in your little cell on the island.

After checking out Alcatraz, we saw the entire Miami Hurricanes football team waiting in line for their chance to see Alcatraz. They were in town to play Cal in the Emerald Bowl.

Google and the Boston Red Sox – What Do They Have in Common?

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Why does googlesux.com redirect to the Boston Red Sox’s home page? Is there some inside joke that I’m missing?

Visions of Larry and Sergey at Burning Man

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

Am I the only one that saw the Travelpod tent and thought of Larry Page and Sergey Brin? I can see them taking their new 767 to Burning Man and staying in something like this.  Of course, they’ll need to upgrade the bed.

Finding the Pieces without the Puzzle

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

This is perhaps the best company motto I’ve ever seen. It belongs to online dating site Online Booty Call (definitely NSFW). From their latest press release:

Reaching the one million member mark with only a single reported marriage is a tremendous accomplishment. We don’t ask for your life story because we don’t care. We think online dating should be easy and fun and not a lot of work. We want members to party and have fun. Our motto is: ‘Finding the pieces without the puzzle.’

I would never have found this if not for the efforts of Dave Evans. Thanks.
