Texas Finally Finds a Running Game

This wasn’t an exciting offense to watch, but it was effective as Texas beat Rice 34 – 17. The Longhorns had 197 yards rushing on 46 carries averaging 4.3 yards a carry. They ran the ball more than they threw it and gained more yards rushing than passing. Even more important was the fact that all 3 backs held on to the ball. Both Newton and Johnson looked good going for 61 and 59 yards each. Newton had 3 rushing TDs. The offensive line looked good too. It will be another 2 weeks before we see how they do against better competition when they go to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.

Two More Reasons Why TCU and Boise State are Stuck Playing Each Other

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

The lowly Mountain West is killing the mighty Pac 10.

The top 3 teams in the Mountain West (TCU, BYU, and Utah), along with Boise State in the WAC, are probably better than the top 3 teams in the Pac 10, Big 10, Big East, ACC, and maybe even the Big 12, with the exception of Texas. Alabama and Florida in the SEC would probably fair well too, but we’ll never know for sure thanks to the fraudulent pairing of TCU against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

#2 Texas to Meet #1 Alabama for the National Championship

Finally a reason to want to go to Pasadena.

I’m predicting a Texas win.

Hook ‘em Horns!

It was ugly, but it’s a win – Texas 13, Nebraska 12

Colt McCoy celebrates as Texas heads to the National Championship Game

Texas will face Alabama for the National Championship.

Last night Texas (#3) defeated Nebraska (#21) 13 to 12 on a 46-yard field goal by Hunter Lawrence as time expired. Texas remains undefeated and will meet Alabama in January in the National Championship Game.

This was a really ugly win. Nebraska’s defense played great, as did the Texas defense. No one expected much scoring by Nebraska, but Texas was supposed to score. Despite being a 14 point underdog, Nebraska was 1 second away from pulling off a huge upset.

Nebraska took a 12 to 10 lead with a 42-yard field goal with 1:44 left. Based on Texas’ offensive performance so far in the game, it didn’t look like they were going to be able to pull off another last minute comeback. Nebraska looked to have the game won. But the wheels fell off for Nebraska.

First, they kicked the ball out of bounds giving Texas the ball at the 40-yard line. Then McCoy completed a pass to Jordan Shipley for a first down. But Nebraska made a horse-collar tackle on Shipley adding another 15 yards to the completion which put Texas in field goal range. At this point, it looked like Texas was going to pull off the comeback. It was down to 3rd and 13 from the 29 yard line. Texas had one time out with 8 seconds left. And then it happened.

Colt McCoy hung on to the ball too long as he rolled right and threw the ball out of bounds under heavy pressure from the Nebraska defense. The clock was down to 0 seconds as the Nebraska sidelines flooded onto the field with an apparent upset victory. But after a review, 1 second was added to the clock giving Texas the opportunity to kick the game winning field goal. And the rest is history.

Texas 49, Texas A&M 39

Colt McCoy rushes for a career high 175 yards.

Texas (#3) moves to 12-0 after a hard-fought victory over Texas A&M. Texas had a great game from Colt McCoy and A&M had a great game from their QB, Jerrod Johnson. But Texas had more big plays and won the turnover battle.

Next up is Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington, TX at Cowboys Stadium.

Who’d Have Guessed?

Would you ever have guessed that Nate Newton is Tre Newton’s father? Aside from the same last name, of course.

Tre looks like an athlete. Nate looks like a football playing Santa Claus. I’m not saying Nate’s not great, because he is. He helped Emmitt Smith to become the all-time leading rusher, Troy Aikman to make the Hall of Fame, and the Dallas Cowboys to win 3 out of 4 straight Super Bowls (92, 93, & 95) with an NFC Championship Game appearance in between. Not bad for a fat guy.

Nope, I don’t see the similarity.

McCoy ranks 10th nationally in pass efficiency, with a 152.33 rating, and is 12th in total offense (292.5 yards per game).

McCoy is an O’Brien finalist for the second consecutive year. He also was a runner-up for the 2008 Heisman Trophy.

Texas (#2) blew out Big 12 rival Baylor today to remain undefeated with a 10 – 0 record. This was one of the most complete games that Texas has played this year. They’re getting better each week.
